My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf My rating: 1 of 5 stars. This past Christmas, when I was shopping for presents for my girlfriend, Amy, I again came across My Friend Dahmer. Cartoonist and journalist Derf Backderf (aka John Backderf) worked his way through the creative process to publish a disturbing account of one of the darker people to ever walk this earth in My Friend Dahmer. My Friend Dahmer (a graphic novel) Written and illustrated by Derf Backderf Abrams ComicArts. 28--My Friend Dahmer, a graphic art memoir by Derf Backderf. My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf Why I picked it up: I'm a fan of Scott Westerfeld's books, and when exploring my library system's new online book system, was surprised to see this title by him that I hadn't heard of. So I quickly bought it, had my assistant Rebecca wrap it up in bright wrapping paper and placed the package under the tree. Jeffery Dahmer a serial killer who killed 17 young men before he was caught, had a friend and this is his story. Powerful and honest, there's no way that a graphic novel memoir of high school years spent with serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer isn't going to be disturbing, but it could have also been gratuitous, self-serving and exploitative. My Friend Dahmer by Derf Backderf This book it totally out of my comfort zone but when I saw it I just had to read it. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. The project will be based on the graphic novel by John. Genre: Graphic novel/biography/true crime/fictionalization. When rock bands come to Milwaukee, they inevitably mention three things during their on-stage banter; beer, the pronunciation of the city's name made famous in Wayne's World (Mee-lay-wau-kay) and Jeffery Dahmer. Derf Backderf's graphic novel My Friend Dahmer considers the awkward teen years of Jeffrey Dahmer, who went on to fame as a killer who trolled Milwaukee's gay community and had a taste for human flesh. With all the Dahmer data he could find, and a head full of memories he can't shake, cartoonist Derf tries to connect with the young serial killer in-the-making. Let me start by saying this one of my first forays into the Graphic Novel universe, and it was definitely a good choice to start with, for those of you that also may not like graphic novels. I know, I know--the idea of "graphic novel" and "Jeffrey Dahmer" in combination seems like a queasy choice at best.
